An estimated 83 million tonnes of plastic waste are currently dispersed in the oceans. Recovering these plastic materials is a global challenge that will require significant effort and substantial resources.

The MAELSTROM project, funded by the European Union, brings together research centers and recycling companies, marine scientists, and robotics experts to leverage the integration of complementary technologies for the sustainable removal of marine litter across various European coastal ecosystems.

The project will develop scalable technologies powered by renewable energy and second-generation fuels to identify, remove, catalogue, and recycle marine waste, transforming it into valuable raw materials.
